Carolina Bed and Breakfast

Foodies Love Asheville, North Carolina!

Posted on by Susan Murray

Here at the Carolina Bed & Breakfast we spend a lot of time thinking about food, reading about food, talking about food and eating food!  In past postings I have shared some recipes with you and made some restaurant reviews.  But the food scene here in Asheville encompasses more.

This March through April WNC Magazine (Western North Carolina) is hosting the 2nd Annual Chef’s Challenge.  A sort of Iron Chef meets Chopped, it will take place at Cucina24 on Monday Nights.
Every week two different restaurants will compete for a chance to move on to the final.  Chefs will be given a secret ingredient which must be used in each of three dishes.  Diners will taste the six dishes  and rate them using professional critics guidelines.  Winners of each round will move on to the quarter-final and semi-final rounds in May with the grand final at the Asheville Wine & Food Festival Grand Tasting in August.

Tickets for each match-up are $49 for a 6 course meal (alcohol beverages are not included in the price). Judging will take place at 6:30 Monday evenings in March and April. You can view details here.  Some of the match-ups and chefs are a little unexpected but at the very least, it should be fun!  James and I have already booked tickets for March 21 (Lexington Avenue Brewery vs. Flight Wood Grill).

Where there are restaurants and chefs, there must be cooking supply stores, and last week James and I discovered a great one right here in our backyard: Kitchen & Company.  Kitchen & Company is a retail outlet for The Kitchen Store.  With over 25,000 items, it is my place of choice for hard to find spices, unusual kitchen gadgets and just a fun way to spend a winter afternoon.

This is a photo of the gadget wall: more than 1200 items!

As you can see, it’s a warehouse!
